At around 0950 today, Scruffy died whilst
defending the nest against an unknown attacker. There was unusually low
activity recorded today. Checking the pictures, it was apparent that Scruffy
had fought with something. At first we thought that she had left the box.
Observing the male, we noticed that he was looking at something out of camera
view. Turning the camera we saw Scruffy's body. We removed Scruffy from the
box.
The male has returned a few times to feed the
young. We hope that the 6 chicks will survive overnight, without mother's
warmth. The lights have been left on full to heat the nest box.
